Sarah's Equine Massage & Manners
I became a certified Equine Sports Massage Therapist in January 2017. I have a passion for helping horses feel their best and be able to move comfortably and perform their duties as pain free as possible.
Equine Sports Therapy Massage
What is Sports Therapy Massage?
Equine Sports Therapy Massage is a non-invasive, hands on application of a variety of different massage techniques. It is extremely useful as a preventative and therapeutic measure and can benefit all horses; from the competitive athlete to the leisure horse. It can help fatigued muscles, ligaments and tendons by increasing circulation, range of motion, improving disposition, relieving muscle spasm/tension, enhancing muscle tone, improving the horses stamina and overall performance.
Massage is terrific for assessing the horses. You get to feel and detect any musculoskeletal abnormalities much sooner than by sight or grooming.
Equine Sports Massage looks at the horse as a whole. It starts with a full evaluation of the horse to determine how its' conformation may affect its performance and any muscular asymmetry is noted. The horses' history is noted, from previous injury to behavioural changes. The horse is then sometimes assessed in hand at walk and trot.
Does you horse need a massage?
Some indications your horse might benefit from a massage can include but not limited to: biting, changed disposition, difficulty collecting, inflammation, lameness, muscle spasm, pigrooting, bolting, stiffness, head tossing, bucking, girthing problems, resistance and refusal, tracking unevenly, shortening of stride, and inhibited motion. If your horse just "doesn't feel right", chances are, they aren't. You would be amazed at how many horses really are sore and not just lazy or arrogant!
Most sessions will last 60-90 minutes, with follow up advice given to the owner in regards to exercises and stretches they can do to further help the horse, and at times recommendations to their veterinarian, saddle fitter or farrier.
There are many benefits to massage. It does more than just ease sore muscles or boost circulation. It can help with a whole range of other things as well, both physical and psychological. Some of these include eliminating toxins, increasing flexibility, increasing healing of injuries, enhanced performance and improved balance and posture.
